Course Overview

Inspired by the Italian craft of bookbinding and box making with classic decorative papers these bookbinding courses have been specifically created to teach basic skills in a fun and relaxed manner so that upon completion you can work independently on projects of your own design. The emphasis is on how to easily and enjoyably make objects without the need for specialist equipment or expensive materials.

Through practical instruction you learn about the construction of books, bindings, box making and covering. You also learn how to recognise the many distinct types of papers available and those that are most suitable for this craft. Classes are limited to a maximum of eight to ensure that the student's individual progress is closely followed. The importance of working at one's own pace is recognised and encouraged.

All classes can be organised on request for groups, including weekend classes. Just call to arrange a programme and dates. The teacher, Louise Garnaut is an Australian who trained and worked in paper restoration and binding techniques in Italy and started teaching the Book and Box course in Hong Kong in 1991.

Introduction

All classes are for beginners and advanced students. The programme consists of five classes per series. Students can do either a box making programme or a combination of bookbinding and boxmaking.

For Advanced students a programme, designed to allow them to pursue their particular interests, is decided on with the teacher.

Please note that it is essential for beginners to attend every class!

All lessons are held from 10 am - 1 pm

All classes held on Mondays

  • Classes restart Monday 8th September 2008 and are held every Monday until December 8th
  • Students need to enrol in 5 consecutive classes and can start at any time pending availability
  • There will be no lesson on September 15th due to the public holiday.
  • Enrolment on 6th October is optional due to the holiday on 7th October.

    Cost

    The cost of all courses includes everything. All materials used, comprehensive guide notes, a Hong Kong supply list of shops that stock materials required to practice this craft and the items made. All equipment used in class is provided and there is no need to bring anything with you. To enrol simply fill out the application form enclosed and send it along with your deposit. A receipt will be sent back acknowledging payment and confirming your place. Please note that it is absolutely essential for beginners to attend every class!

    Refund Policy

    The deposit is refundable only for cancellations made one week before the course starting date. Also note that all classes are non transferable and non refundable This course requires a practical hands on approach and it is therefore essential to arrive on time and come to all classes. It is the responsibility of the student to attend the classes at the set times and makeup classes are not offered for missed classes. If it is not possible to attend all classes wait to enrol in a course when you can attend all the lessons. Classes are not held when the black rain warning or typhoon signal 8 has been hoisted. In the case of signal 3 or other rain warnings please call Bookworks to check if the class will go ahead.
